Tonal Drift Fan The intimacy with which this album was record really shines. Ms Calhouns love for her chosen instrument - the cello - is very apparent. Picking a favorite is hard but I will pick the happy go lucky "Bumblebeasy" . Favorite track: Bumblebeasy.

about

This album was written, recorded and mixed during the month of May 2022 within the Album Writing Club challenge started by Lights and Lines. Winner of a One To Watch Award.

More about the album:

Act Three -

This is my first solo album, recorded in a bedroom studio on my Isotope Spire Studio machine, which was an impulse purchase at the start of the pandemic when I realized I could add cello lines to singer/songwriter albums from the comfort and safety of my home. That purchase started a whole new thinking process, exploring creativity and cello sounds in contexts other than the classical world that I live in for the majority of my life.

The title, Act Three, references moving into a new stage of my life, feeling confident in my creativity and the value of the music I create. Having come through my classical studies where anything that wasn’t ‘high art music’ was discouraged and looked down upon, for me to feel comfortable creating songs of my own that bring joy to me (and hopefully other listeners) is huge!

I recorded all the cello parts at home, and was even joined on the last track ‘10 Mile’ by my son, Lucas Calhoun (aged 13) on his electronic drum kit. Not only was this album a voyage of discovery in my creativity and confidence, but also a huge learning curve; mixing, adding reverb, adding drum loops, figuring out what ‘gain’ and ‘delay’ really meant, and how when you add reverb it moves the track back in the mix… huge learning project! And now I’m hooked… can’t wait for the next one!
